Chapter 21
Cold metal rubbed against Miaâs spine as she patiently maneuvered through brush and trees, climbing the rocky hill. The gun remained secure and provided a sense of safety, as did the Glock in her ankle holster. She kept the flashlight low on the trail and had for the past two miles after parking her car just inside the third gate to the Volk Mining property. Someone had left the gates open.
She and Pete had spent most of the day reviewing maps of the terrain and had created a plan where heâd approach Howlerâs Ridge from the far north, and sheâd walk the three miles and come from the south.
The fact that the mineâs trucks were on their own property failed to provide any probable cause for her and Pete to obtain a warrant. So, yeah, they were trespassing.
Whatever they saw would not be admissible in court.
But she needed to know. Theyâd form a plan to gain evidence elsewhere if something illegal was going on. Every instinct sheâd developed through years of investigations told her that something was happeningâsomething that involved her new lover.
Lover.
Seth Volk. Heâd definitely acted sketchy when sheâd asked him about Howlerâs Ridge.
He was the one person in her life she hadnât been able to get some sort of handle on. Sleeping with him had most certainly been a mistake, but a small part of her had rejoiced in the experience. Sheâd never felt like thatâand probably wouldnât ever again. He had been right in saying the pain would be worth it. Even if she had to arrest him, even if she mightâve blown the entire case, the night had changed her.
Of course, if he was doing something illegal out at Howlerâs Ridge, sheâd do everything in her power to take him down. Justice mattered. Her job mattered.
Moonlight cast shadows from the pine trees yet clearly illuminated her path. Firelight glimmered through the trunks ahead, and she took a deep breath of relief. Her legs burned from the walk, reminding her that she really needed to get back into shape. At one time, a three-mile hike wouldnât have made her breathe heavily.
Times had apparently changed.
Music wafted through the night, the breeze carrying a haunting and mournful tune. The trail turned to rock. She climbed cautiously, finally reaching the top. Her heart hammering, she peeked around a blue spruce and looked toward a sprawling vista about twenty feet below. A crackling fire blazed in the middle of the round area. One side was rock, one side forested, one a grassy parking area, and the final dropped into nothingness to reach what appeared from the map to be the Lonely River.
About fifty people milled around the fire, their voices hushed, their moods as somber as the music blasting from one of the mining trucks.
Mia lifted the binoculars secured by a strap around her neck for a better view.
The blood instantly froze in her veins.
Her first focus landed on Seth as he stood by his father. Her second focus stopped her breathing.
